Bridging the Summits: Shaping a Prosperous Future Together
By Isabella Evason, Operations and Logistics / Project Manager, MIT ReACT
In a world of increasing displacement due to conflict, persecution, natural disasters, and climate change, the need for innovative, inclusive solutions is more urgent than ever. Launching the 3rd annual Migration Summit, an initiative organized by MIT Emerging Talent, Na’amal, and Karam Foundation, we are excited to announce our collaboration with the Future of Work Summit, hosted by the Thinking Ahead on Societal Change (TASC) Platform at the Geneva Graduate Institute, our organizations are united around our shared missions to unite diverse communities and perspectives to build a more prosperous future for displaced individuals and their host communities.
Changing narratives
Across the globe, millions are forced to flee their homes, but these aren't just stories of flight or loss—they are also stories of potential and new beginnings. Displaced communities bring with them untapped experience, talent, resilience, and motivation. Dignified employment for displaced people is crucial for fostering social harmony, activating innovation and creativity, and driving economic progress. There do, however, exist challenges – including misconceptions and biases – that hinder their employment opportunities.
Fueled by popular media and incomplete narratives, many perceive displaced individuals as unreliable or unskilled in the workplace. By dispelling common myths with data, connections and community, we believe mindsets can be shifted and more stakeholders brought into the fold to address real, solvable barriers including legal and regulatory challenges, qualification recognition, and workplace discrimination.
The Power of Collaboration: Future of Work Summit
The Future of Work Summit took place on June 20th at the Geneva Graduate Institute and explored practical tools to build trust, shift mindsets and shape collaborative efforts, with a focus on two crucial unknowns at the forefront of domestic and international discourse: Migration and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Through its collaboration with the Migration Summit, the TASC team will share on June 26th the critical insights gathered during the Future of Work Summit during its sessions during which participants were introduced to the power of systems thinking as a tool for informing collaboration and silo-breaking, and discuss the challenges of working with the unknown
By breaking down silos and fostering cross-sector dialogue, TASC’s Summit aims to uncover new narratives and coordinate solutions that benefit everyone.
Collaborating with the Future of Work Summit highlights the interconnectedness of migration and employment. This collaboration is set to explore and promote existing solutions and share experiences from both sides of the refugee employment equation.
Connecting Migration and Employment: A Unified Approach
The 2024 Migration Summit – "Unlocking and Engaging Talent: Pathways for Dignified Work” – takes place on June 24-28, and seeks to:
Shift mindsets about the positions migrants/refugees/displaced individuals should occupy in the employment space
Spark actions that will grow the pipeline/pool of career opportunities - ‘good jobs’
Develop a resource platform of materials for use now and build on it for future training, advocacy etc.
In addition to the virtual events week, The Migration Summit also supports in-person events across different countries and directs an online communications campaign, highlighting the capabilities and perspectives of those who are at the forefront. The campaign aims to proliferate informative content, new resources for tangible application, and opportunities for active collaboration.
By cultivating a shared vision and promoting a paradigm shift in how participants relate to one another, the Migration Summit’s ultimate aim is to augment and strengthen collective efforts towards dignified employment pathways.
