Richard Samans joins the Geneva Graduate Institute as a Senior Fellow
The Geneva Graduate Institute and Center for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI) is delighted to be joined this year by Richard Samans, a leading author and international authority on the fundamental reform of economic policy, corporate governance and the academic discipline of economics to support a more inclusive and environmentally sustainable future.
“I am so pleased and honoured to be joining the remarkable community of scholars and practitioners at the Graduate Institute, which I know from experience makes such an important contribution to ‘Geneve Internationale’ and the wider United Nations system.”
As a CTEI Senior Fellow, Richard will work with the TASC Platform on supporting constructive dialogue and cooperation in the midst of societal change and transitions, and on convening the new United Nations Economist Network Working Group on Human-Centred Economics and Sustainable Development.
Richard’s contributions will build on his extensive experience and publications on governance and policy - spanning economics, international trade, labour, finance, development, climate and environment, and corporate and multilateral governance. His latest book, “Human-Centred Economics: The Living Standards of Nations,” was recognized by the Financial Times as one of the best books on economics of 2024.
Richard was formerly Research Director and G20/G7 Sherpa of the International Labour Organization; founder and chairman of Climate Disclosure Standards Board; Managing Director of the World Economic Forum; Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute; Special Assistant to the President for International Economic Policy and National Security Council; Senior Director for International Economic Affairs in the second Clinton-Gore Administration; and economic policy advisor to US Senate Democratic Leader Thomas A. Daschle.
As an active contributor to the UN System, Richard has served as a member of the Secretary General’s Task Force on Digital Financing of the Sustainable Development Goals; ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work; UNEP Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System; and Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria Transitional Working Group.
Richard is currently also Senior Economic Adviser to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and a nonresident Senior Fellow in the Center for Sustainable Development at the Brookings Institution.
